The Fringe is back in Edinburgh and this means that there is work for music composers.
I recently worked with Building Blocks Collective on a show called Our Boy. This is a play written by Helen Hammond and directed for the 2022 Fringe by Chris Honey.
Back in January I discussed the script on a scene by scene basis to work out the song and sound design requirements for the show. As with any stage show, you can have concepts and ideas but the main work happens closer to the show launch and especially once rehearsals start.
I had a number of song references from Chris in January which gave me the basic style ideas. Some further discussions were to be had though once the theatre work began.
So in July, while the actors were rehearsing for the August show launch, I recorded approximately 15 sound files for use in the scenes. Those were tweaked until they were the correct length for each scene. Some sounds were meant for looping, while others sounded more like full instrumental songs.
The Fringe is in full swing. There is a pin in there if you see the show logo. And so far the show has had a 4 star review. It is great to see how the director has applied the music in the show. This was very exciting when I saw it for the first time on stage.
I have released a 5 song soundtrack for the show on all the usual streaming platforms. Here is the Spotify link.
I hope you enjoy it.
